The Almost Home Project: Stretch and Scratch Cat Scratchers Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The stretch and scratch cat scratchers were placed in the kennels with kitties waiting to be adopted. They could scratch on them and scent them to their hearts desire. When they were adopted, the scratcher was taken out of the kennel and placed in the pet carrier to go home with them so they would have something that smelled familiar in their new home and also to provide something to scratch on in their new home.

This grant helped our organization by providing a cat scratcher as enrichment in the kennels. It also helped us explain to the families adopting the kitties how important it is that the kitties be allowed to scratch on something and quite often explaining how cruel declawing was.

Paige Kitterman spotted Coal on Petfinder right before Christmas and she and her husband drove from Ft. Lewis to pick him up. Her husband was getting ready to deploy and they had wanted to add a kitty to their family for a while. They had just been waiting for the right one to appear on Petfinder. When she saw Coal she knew he was the one. This was one time when it was ok to get Coal for Christmas.
