Stafford SPCA: A Shot at Life Vaccination Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Our standard of care for our adoptable animals rises above merely what the state requires. In receiving the vaccine grant that we did, we were able to continue our elevated standard of care in providing feline and canine distempers to all shelter animals. Beyond that, we were also able to provide FIV vaccines to our entire adult cat population, which is something that we normally don't do since all our cats are negative for Felv/FIV/HW and our adoption contract requires that the cats remain indoors at all times.

The FIV vaccine portion of this grant provided us with increased peace of mind, knowing that, even in the event of human error, our cats have a barrier of protection. Typically, we purchase 1 year distemper vaccines for our dogs. This grant provided 3 year distempers that we were able to give to some of our older dogs or dogs that have been in our care for an extended period of time. The savings to our rescue totaled about $1200-$1500. The feeling of having vaccines on hand when needed, is priceless.

How many pets did this grant help?

49 adult cats received the Fel-O-Vax FIV vaccine. 5 dogs received the Duramune Adult 3 vaccines and 15 cats received the Fel-O-Guard 4 vaccines.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Jackson and Amber have been long time residents of our 4 year old shelter. Jackson came to us in 2010 when his original owner became very ill. Amber came to us in the summer of 2011 as a very young mom with 4 newborn kittens. One kitten passed and the other three were quickly adopted. Jackson and Amber are both, very sweet, yet very shy cats that tend to get overlooked when people come into our shelter.

Two weeks ago, an amazing, extremely ‘zen’ like couple came in after seeing the Petfinder bio’s for two other cats and were “selected” by these two very low-key lovebugs. Last week, they went to their forever home and the happy new parents have sent us some of the most beautiful pictures of their new sibling kitties cuddling together.
