Paws for Life Utah: P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We were granted P.L.A.Y. pet beds and they were used by the shelter dogs that we rescue. They were provided to fosters as well as to dogs in our boarding facility, and the dogs just loved them! They are easy to wash, very comfortable and a favorite of our shelter pets. We used them for the dogs we rescued from [an open-admission] shelter in Los Angeles county, as well as for dogs we rescued from a hoarding situation in Las Vegas.

It helped us because we did not need to purchase pet beds. These beds were used primarily at our boarding facility and with fosters. In two of our larger rescues, such as when we rescued 17 Pomeranians from the hoarding situation in Las Vegas, or when we rescued 22 small dogs from [an open-admission] shelter in Los Angeles, they were given to fosters to use. Our dogs love them -- they are super comfy! Our shelter staff and fosters love them too, as they are easy to clean and machine-washable!

How many pets did this grant help?

We reuse them, of course, so this helped 50 shelter pets.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

We were made aware of a terrible hoarding situation by the Animal Foundation in Las Vegas. A breeder/hoarder was “on the run” from San Bernardino to Las Vegas with a U-Haul full of illegally bred Pomeranian dogs and puppies. These dogs were abandoned in a U-Haul outside of Las Vegas. Over 160 dogs were crammed into crates on top of each other. An open-intake shelter saved them, and fortunately none needed to be euthanized. However, the sheer number of rescued pets put a huge burden on their facility, and they reached out to rescues in the area for help. Paws for Life Utah rescued 17 of these Pomeranians. One was a mother who was pregnant and later gave birth to puppies (first photo). We loaned the P.L.A.Y. beds to our fosters and they were so loved by these dogs. They were also so simple and easy to clean and sanitize. These dogs have since been adopted. Some had medical needs, including the puppies pictured, and found loving homes that were prepared to care for them and take care of those needs. Thank you for these wonderful, easy-to-use and super-comfy pet beds!
