Animal Shelter Alliance of Rhea: Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The money from the senior pet grant award was used for our sweet senior, Apollo. The grant covered his adoption fee, medical testing, vaccines, flea/tick protection, and special food.

The grant allowed us to search for a loving foster/hospice home for Apollo. By using the grant money for his special food and medical needs and to cover the adoption fee, we were able to take care of this sweet boy with essentially no cost from our reserve budget. That means that $750 is still available to be used for other animals who may need our help.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Apollo was part of a rescue operation in which we rescued 58 dogs from one home. Apollo is about 12 years old, and he spent the vast majority of his life chained to a post in the front yard.

Working in a shelter, we see a lot of stuff, and sometimes the really special ones just tug at our hearts. We could see, as soon as he got to the shelter and off that chain, that he is just such a special, happy boy! Everyone he meets gets a wag and smile, and when he’s feeling up to it, a little bounce or pounce as well!

Apollo is heartworm-positive and has visible tumors on his boy parts. He’s also deaf and nearly blind, with only two teeth. He’s not healthy enough to undergo heartworm treatment or surgery, so he essentially went to a foster/hospice home to happily live out the rest of his days.

His new home is on a farm, and his new playmates are goats! He surprises us every day because he loves to run around in his five-acre fenced field to play with his new friends! He also has a loving new mom, dad, and two human siblings who play with him all the time!
