Darlington County Humane Society: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The money was used to purchase vaccines, SNAP kits for heartworm testing, SNAP kits for FIV testing in cats, and parvo test kits for dogs.

This grant helped to keep our pets healthy while waiting for their new homes and also allowed us to run basic blood work on them in preparation for our adoption floor.

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Gladys arrived at our shelter at the height of the pandemic in early April. Her family was “thinning out” the number of pets in their care and she was one of several to find themselves suddenly homeless and in need. Thanks to your grant support, we had vaccines on hand to keep her healthy and a SNAP kit to deliver the news that she was heartworm-positive. Despite the challenge of her being heartworm-positive, we were able to get her in for treatment and then into one of our rescue partners, where she was adopted soon after her arrival.
