How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant is dedicated to helping Marty find a furever home. While Marty has not been adopted yet, we are hopeful that the right family will come along soon, and this grant will provide the financial support needed to help ease Marty's transition. His care is more expensive than most dogs', as explained below. We have been highlighting the financial assistance available to potential adopters, and we have seen more interest in Marty as a result.

Marty was originally brought to our organization in December of 2020 when he was found abandoned on a beach. He presented to us with severe hair loss, itching, and he was emaciated.
It was evident that Marty had been eating rocks on the beach to survive. He spent about two months in our care and we worked diligently to get his skin condition under control.
He was adopted in January of 2021. During his time with his adopter, Mary continued to suffer from skin allergies and his adopter sought veterinary care several times for his issues. Unfortunately, the adopter could no longer properly care for Marty and he was returned to Vieques Humane Society in August of 2021.
Since then, he has had a consultation with a veterinary dermatologist and his new treatment plan seems to be helping. He is eating special food, taking daily medications, and receiving twice–week medicated baths.
Marty is one of the most affectionate dogs we currently have in care. He craves attention from people and wants to be with someone wherever he goes. He is always happy, wagging his tail, and flashing his big smile — despite not having many teeth!
We know there is a family out there who will be able to give Marty the care he needs, and he will pay them back in return with his love. He is wonderful with other dogs, cats, people, and children and would make the perfect addition to any home.
