One Dog at a Time ODAAT: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We are a 100% foster-based, all-volunteer, donation-run rescue and during the early months of COVID, we sadly had to close to new intakes because our fosters were full and our only method of adopting out was through meet-and-greets, which were no longer permitted in a "shelter-in-place" situation.

Just prior to that, we had taken in two puppies whose total bills were over $7,000 due to their medical conditions. Sadly, because of COVID-19, we also had to cancel our scheduled in-person fundraisers. Another blow to the rescue.

Shortly after making that painful decision to close to intakes, we received a desperate phone call from a group of outstanding guys who were at their hunting camp and came across a pup in the woods who was weak and emaciated. They fed him and affectionately named him Jack. They tried to find help and an owner and were unsuccessful. That is when they reached out to ODAAT.

Our team went out to meet them in the woods to take a look at Jack. We could not turn away from him. We rushed him to an animal hospital, where he was hospitalized. We used this grant to pay for Jack's care and to give him a chance at the life he deserved.

This grant helped us to pay for Jack's care without putting additional financial and emotional strain on our rescue if we had to refuse him. Because of this grant, we didn't have to turn him away and we were able to cover most of his medical expenses. He was diagnosed with emaciation and anemia and tested positive for Lyme and anaplasmosis. He was inpatient for several days. He was put on a very slow refeed and required pâté food and kibble. We are so excited to share with you that he made a full recovery and has been adopted out to a loving family and is living his best life!

How many pets did this grant help?

This grant directly helped Jack. But ultimately, it also allowed us to use the the limited funds we had in the rescue to care for the other animals.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Shortly after making the painful decision to close to intakes, we received a desperate phone call from a group of outstanding guys who were at their hunting camp and heard cries in the distance. They followed the sounds and came across a dog in the woods who was weak and unable to move (first photo).

They brought him back to their camp, fed him and affectionately named him Jack (second photo). They tried to find help and locate an owner but were unsuccessful. That is when they reached out to ODAAT.

Our team went out to meet them in an extremely remote section of woods to take a look at Jack. We just could not turn away from him. We rushed him to an animal hospital, where he was hospitalized. He was emaciated, anemic and tested positive for Lyme and anaplasmosis (another tick-borne disease). He was put on a slow refeed and required pâté food and kibble.

We used this grant to pay for Jack’s care and to give him a chance at the life he deserved. We are thrilled to report that Jack has been adopted and is living his best life thanks to the help of this Petfinder Foundation COVID-19 grant (fifth and sixth photo).
