New Leash on Life USA: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Due to Covid-19, our dogs needed to be removed from the prison program a few weeks earlier than expected. The funds received from the Petfinder Foundation allowed us to purchase supplies for the dogs while they were in foster homes.

The grant allowed us to keep the dogs in safe and secure foster homes while we completed the adoption process to ensure the dogs were being placed in the perfect homes.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Onyx was our toughest dog to place, for no reason at all. She is sweet and well-behaved but just had no interest or applications. We received one application and it turned out to be perfect. See below, in the words of her adopter:

“Izzy (formerly Onyx) is the best pup we could have asked for. She is incredibly sweet and LOVES cuddling — all the time! No matter what you’re doing or where you’re sitting, if she thinks she’ll get pets, then she will try her hardest to climb into your lap. And of course, she usually ends up getting pets 🙂

“She’s also super playful! The whole family loves playing with her and she’s always ready for a game of chase-Izzy-around-the-kitchen-table. She still loves her firehouse toy that she came to us with, but she also has expanded her toy collection by quite a bit. She discovered the stash of lacrosse balls in the garage and now you’ll rarely see her without one in her mouth, even when she’s sleeping! She loves to play fetch with the lacrosse balls in the yard too, and she’s really good about staying in the yard and not running off.

“We also found out that she LOVES the hose (and any running water, really). She absolutely goes crazy for it. If she hears the spigot squeak, she is instantly begging to be let out to play with the hose! This makes bath time a lot of fun, but also very wet — great for hot summer days! Her other favorite hobby is being a four-legged vacuum cleaner for all the crumbs on the kitchen floor. She’s not picky, either — she loves veggies like carrots and cucumbers.

“My mom has gotten really into making Izzy new collars for each month of the year. We just switched her from her Pride-month collar to her patriotic collar, and there are lots more to come! Izzy is always ready to play or nap depending on the mood in the house. She is so happy and she makes everyone else in the house just as happy! We are so glad she’s become a part of our family!”
