Underdogs Rock! Rescue: Sponsor a Pet Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Underdogs Rock! received its first donation through the Petfinder Foundation's Sponsor a Pet program. The donation was used to purchase medicine for Oscar, a 15-year-old doxie who was taken in after his owner posted him on Craig's List with his brother. All pets are taken to the vet to determine their health, and Oscar was found to have a heart murmur. Oscar will be on medication for the rest of his life.

When older dogs are taken into rescue, they often take longer to be brought to health after years of no medical care. Once they are healthy, it can still take longer for us to find a home for them. Senior dogs are some of the best dogs out there, though they often need medication, which becomes an ongoing expense that their adoption fees do not even begin to cover.

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Oscar and his brother Thor, both 15, were put up for free on Craig’s List. Underdogs stepped in to make sure that the dogs will find a secure and loving home. The first step was a trip to the vet, where Oscar was diagnosed with a heart murmur. He will be on medication for the rest of his life at $25 a month. Small donations are what allow us to provide continuing care for animals who, due to their age, take longer to place.
