Second Chance Rescue: Shelter Challenge Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We saved a puppy with severe mange from the euth list at NYC ACC and paid her medical bills.

It enabled us to save and rehabilitate another dog. No dog should be euthanized because they have mange.

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

On May 12, 2013 we rescued Roxy, a 5 month old pitbull mix from the NYC ACC. Roxy was on the euth list the night we pulled her. She was an owner surrender for “pet health” and had horrible mange.
We took Roxy to our vet and got her treatment for mange. After several days, she was released to the care of one of our fosters who continued her treatment. Besides the medications to treat the mange, our foster nursed her back to health by providing a nutritious and balanced diet, a low stress home and lots of TLC.
Now, just 3 months later, Roxy’s mange is gone, most of her hair has grown back and she’s ready for her forever home!
The attached “before and after” picture tells the story better than words, and the results are remarkable. Our Dark Horse grant covered the cost of Roxy’s medical treatment.
