Last Chance Animal Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The money from this grant was used to help fund medical care for a dog named Cheyenne, who suffered from an aggressive cancer in her mouth. She had to have emergency surgery to remove the cancer in an attempt to save her life.

This grant helped make Cheyenne's care possible. With estimates in the several-thousand-dollar range, we were desperately looking for ways to fund Cheyenne's cancer treatment and give her her best chance.

This emergency medical grant helped fund Cheyenne’s medical care. Cheyenne came to our sanctuary several years ago after being dumped at an overcrowded shelter. She was terrified and grieving badly. We brought her to the sanctuary in hopes of finding her a forever home, but she was still badly grieving, wouldn’t eat and contracted pneumonia. Once she recovered, she became an ambassador for the sanctuary and a surrogate mother to all the new arrivals there, preparing them to find their forever homes.

Cheyenne was a best friend to so many of our residents at the sanctuary. When two masses emerged on her jaw, we were devastated and wanted to give her every chance that she deserved. When her total care was estimated at around $10,000, we were extremely worried that we would not be able to provide it for her. However, with this grant and many of our supporters stepping up for her, Cheyenne was able to get the surgery she needed with a specialist.

Unfortunately, when the surgeon got in there, he saw that the cancer had spread more than they’d expected and they had to remove a larger portion of her jaw than planned.

She came through the surgery well, but sadly did not make it in the end. Even though she is not with us anymore, her spirit lives on at our sanctuary and through our everyday lives. We cannot thank you enough for giving us this opportunity to help Cheyenne!
