How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
Thank you for awarding the Emergency Medical Grant to Almost Home. The grant was used to pay medical costs for Candy Cane, who was suffering from lungworms. She received three treatments that included Immiticide, Alfaxan, and Buprenex from Atlantic Coast New York Veterinary Specialists. We're waiting for her follow-up testing.

This grant helped Candy Cane. The 2-year-old hound mix had been let down repeatedly, finding herself homeless, starved, and neglected, and then testing heartworm positive.
Candy Cane came to us at Almost Home to start her healing journey and find a forever family. Upon checking her kennel early one December morning, we found Candy Cane covered in her own blood. She was rushed to a veterinarian, who ordered multiple tests and X-rays.
She eventually tested positive for a respiratory parasite called capillaria boehmi, also known as lungworm. This particular parasite is very challenging to treat and recover from. She needed specialized care provided by Atlantic Coast Veterinary Services Bohemia: Three antiparasitic treatments were required, as well as follow-up echocardiograms.
She is currently recovering in foster care.
