Saugerties Animal Shelter: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This product was used to enrich the lives of dogs in our care. Shelter life is tough, so staff and volunteers are always doing their best to make an animal’s time with us as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. One way that has always proven successful is introducing Kong toys. Whether they are filled with peanut butter and used for quiet time or brought outside for fetch session, they are always well-received.

We often use Kongs for stressed dogs, puppies, and as treats. Kongs are great for dogs with anxiety, as they give them something to focus on, they’re wonderful for teething puppies, and we have yet to meet a pup who doesn’t love a frozen peanut-butter Kong!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Buddy (first three photos) is a Manchester terrier who came to our shelter incredibly overweight. He was depressed and hardly able to move. In our care, Buddy has not only been put on a diet, he is also getting some much-needed exercise. It was not long after Buddy’s arrival that we discovered his love for fetch!

When we received our Kongs, staff members took Buddy into our fenced-in play area and presented him with all the Kongs he could choose from, and he was absolutely delighted! These Kongs are not only helping Buddy get the exercise he needs, but they are helping us learn everything we can about him to help us find him the best home possible. We will be sure that when his forever home finds him, they will be sure to continue supporting Buddy’s love of Kongs. Meet Buddy here.
