Sweet little Smoosh was found as a skinny little kitten, covered in fleas, with a high fever and infected eyes, tied to a bush in Trenton, N.J., in January 2016. We soon learned she had several severe birth defects, including an enlarged heart, lung disease, and a host of other abnormalities, including a lack of eyelids. After several consultations and many tests, the specialists told us this sweet kitten’s life would be a limited one – maybe weeks, probably months, and definitely not years. Her adoring foster parents decided to give her the best possible life she could have for as long as she could have it, and little Smoosh defied all the odds. She grew pudgier, stronger and braver every day. She survived three surgeries and was adopted by her amazing foster family. These days, Smoosh, a.k.a. Melon Ball, The Baller or Pudgems, is a cone-free, happy spirit who loves to chase flies, look at birds, and play laser tag. Her heart condition will always be with her and she’ll always have lots of medicines, but Melon has a bright future with all the love a young cat could ever have. #TeamMelon
