A Pathway to Hope: Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

See below.

The money was used to provide food and boarding for several of our dogs. When our foster families are full, we are fortunate to still be able to provide rescue to animals in need because of two fabulous boarding facilities that give the rescue discounted rates. Buster and Tig, two of our long-timers that we have no idea why they took so long to get adopted, were in boarding for nearly two years. These costs can be prohibitive for a small rescue such as ours. With the Orvis grant through the Petfinder Foundation, we were able to pay for three months of additional boarding for these dogs.

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Tig, a big, tough-looking guy, was found running in the street with his brother with no collar, no tags, and no one looking for him. Luckily, Pathway found him before he was hit by a car, starved to death out on his own, or was attacked. Tig’s brother was not so lucky; he was already sick when we found him and he did not make it. As our fosters were all full at the time, Tig went into one of our wonderful boarding facilities — Hotel for Dogs in Middletown, NJ — where they cared for him. It turned out that Tig was not such a tough guy after all, but a big, lovable mush-ball who loved everyone he met. He is a big boy though — kind of like a gentle bull in a china shop.

Tig did not get adopted for nearly two years; during that time, Pathway — aided by generous donations and grants — paid for his boarding and care and he lived happily at Hotel for Dogs, where the wonderful staff cared for him and he played with all the other dogs there. When an adoption takes this long, we know the right family is out there for a dog and they just haven’t found each other yet. Sometimes it takes longer, but when it finally happens, it was meant to be. And Tig waited patiently for almost two years for his forever family.

Finally, a wonderful family fell in love with Tig and adopted him. It was bittersweet time for our Pathway volunteers and the folks at Hotel for Dogs, as we had all grown to love Tig dearly, but we are so happy that he has finally found his forever home! Tig and Pathway thank both Orvis and the Petfinder Foundation!
