How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

To keep our dogs occupied during down time in their kennels.

Our goal at RBARI is to find permanent homes for all of our animals. A busy, calm, relaxed dog is a happy dog who shows well for adoptions. We use Kongs often at the shelter to keep our dogs occupied during their down time, when they are not out in the play yard, taking walks or attending a training session. A dog who shows well has a shorter stay at the shelter, thus making room for others. These Kongs, in addition to time out of the kennel (walks, training, playing) help reduce the level of anxiety and stress the dogs are under by providing positive, daily interaction. It sounds simple, but Kongs do improve the quality of the dog’s stay at the shelter. RBARI is able to rescue more dogs as we shorten the time each dog remains in the shelter.

Confetti has been with RBARI since she was just a puppy. Sadly, in her younger months, Confetti did not get the socialization and training that she so needed. Shelter life can be tough at times for Confetti when all her friends leave for the day. Sadly, Confetti injured her leg and requires surgery, another setback in her journey. Her special time outside of the shelter is now limited, and we are very concerned that she will become depressed. Confetti has been enjoying her Kongs while she is recovering. It’s her favorite treat and keeps her mind occupied when she isn’t hanging out with her friends.
