City of St. Louis Animal Care and Control: Beggin' Pet Parade Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The grant funds were used to purchase animal transport and temporary holding equipment such as large and small pet carriers and crates. Previously, our pet carriers were older, heavily used, and in ill repair. Animals were prone to escapes and the variety of donated crates and carriers were not easy to sanitize (the fourth photo is an example of one of the old carriers).
The grant funds helped our animals to reach our rescue partners safely and comfortably. We do not have an adoption program and instead rely on our rescue partners to accept animal transfers. Our Animal Care and Control Officers may drive over an hour to reach some of our partners. Having new, reliable, and comfortable transport carriers and crates means we are able to transport more animals. Additionally, our capacity to respond to emergencies or larger-scale investigations/seizures has been increased due to the stockpile of new carriers and crates.
How many pets did this grant help?
We received the carriers/crates funded by the Beggin' Pet Parade Grant on Sept. 4. Since that time, we have transported 37 animals to our rescue partners all over the St. Louis region. All of these animals will have used our transport carriers/crates at some point in the transfer process. We are on track to transfer out 100+ more animals prior to the end of 2015.

Lexie, Lilly, and Leah are three wonderful dogs surrendered by a citizen who had more pets than they were able to care for. We transported these three inseparable canines from the residence to our shelter, where they received the individual attention they deserved. Gradually, over several weeks, their distinct personalities were revealed and their goofy antics caught the attention of our rescue partner Needy Paws Rescue. All three dogs were transferred to Needy Paws Rescue. They arrived safely and comfortably thanks to the crates/carriers purchased with funds from the Beggin’ Pet Parade grant!
