Independence Animal Services: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

During a time when our shelter was almost at critical capacity, the Kia Pet Adoption Grant allowed us to lower our adoption fees temporarily to adopt out animals and get them into the homes they all deserve.

During this grant time, we were able to find homes for approximately 160 animals. No animal deserves to be in a shelter, and this grant helped us make sure that our animals found good homes to go to.

How many pets did this grant help?

Approximately 160 pets were helped by this grant.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

We had a dog at our shelter named Howie for approximately five months. Howie was so shut-down here, he often cowered in the back of his kennel and was extremely terrified. We never really saw Howie’s actual personality come out until he got to go home.

The reduced adoption fees allowed this family to take a chance on Howie, and it really paid off. Howie is now living the life that he deserves and is happier than we have ever seen him.

The adopters told us, “He is certainly ‘finding his voice’ in the best way possible. Howie greets his dad with lots of loves, licks, tail-wags, and grunts when he gets home from work each day. We have made a trip to Petco already and Howie has picked out some new toys; his favorite is his duck that squeaks! He has picked his spot on the couch and his new daddy has gladly handed it over. Howie is such a great addition to our family and had helped fill our hearts with puppy love all over again!”

This story brought all of us so much happiness because that is why we all got into this line of work, to help the animals who truly need us to believe in them. We believed in Howie, and now he is living the good life.
