Safe Hands Animal Rescue: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Heartworm treatment for a dog

This grant helped pay for heartworm treatment for a dog named Jack. When Covid closed down many transport routes, a shelter in Arkansas was struggling with too many animals and no outlets for them. We were able to assist them and move some dogs into our program. This grant allowed us to take a heartworm-positive dog and provide treatment for him.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Jack was found in terrible conditions. He was tied up in a muddy, flooded pen (fifth photo). He had very little ground to sit or stand on that wasn’t under water. At almost 8 years old and heartworm-positive, Jack didn’t have many options. The shelter he was in was severely crowded after Covid-19 caused its regular transport options to cancel. Thanks to the grant from the Petfinder Foundation, we were able to accept Gentleman Jack into our program and provide him the medical care he needed to get healthy. Now Jack is home — he’s been adopted and has a dad who adores him!
