Cheboygan County Humane Society: Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We were never able to do off-site adoptions before because we did not have the proper kennels to secure and showcase our dogs. We used the Orvis grant to purchase portable kennels that were easy to transport and set up at various adoption events. We are so grateful for the new kennels.

We are now hosting monthly adoption events at various locations. We have placed eight pets so far and folks who have not adopted yet are always there "looking" for the right pet.

How many pets did this grant help?

In addition to the eight pets adopted at the events, we collected hundreds of pounds of food for our pet-food pantry.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

The two dogs brought to our recent adoption event using the new kennels were Shadow (first photo) and Princess (second photo). From Shadow’s Petfinder profile: “Shadow is a spayed female terrier mix. She is around 11 years old and has never been around cats before. She is shy at first but once she gets to know you she is full of love. Shadow is housebroken and would love for you to come out and take her for a walk so she can find a forever home.” Meet Shadow: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/35164201

From Princess’s Petfinder profile: “Princess is a spayed female pit bull who is looking for a very special home. She is around 4 years old and is housebroken. While Princess did come in with some other dogs, we are looking for a home that has no other pets. Princess does require some extra attention and love and is looking for someone who is going to provide a wonderful home for her. If you are interested in Princess, please come out and take her for a walk or call and ask more about her.” Meet Princess: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/35164220

Charlie is a blind golden retriever. He was found as a stray and was adopted from one of our offsite adoption events by a wonderful couple who had recently lost their old dog, Heidi. He now has a great home and is greatly loved.
