Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue: Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Our $1,000 grant was used towards the care of an 8-year-old Chihuahua named Jasmine. Her care is ongoing, but to date, her care has cost approximately $898. The remainder of the funds was used towards spaying/neutering another shelter dog.

This grant provided much-needed funds to assist in our adoption efforts. More than half of the money awarded was used specifically for one dog who needed some extra medical care. The rest was used towards spaying/neutering other animals.

How many pets did this grant help?

This grant has helped two pets, one of whom was in great need of medical care. The other pet was altered.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Jasmine came to our shelter in April of 2016. As soon as we saw this girl, we knew she needed our help desperately. She was quiet and timid but very sweet and friendly. Right away, we noticed something was terribly wrong. She was missing all of the hair on her tail, her skin was swollen and waterlogged, her ears were swollen shut and infected, and she was morbidly obese. Jasmine is a black-and-white Chihuahua who should weigh approximately 12-15 lbs. When we got her on the scale she was a whopping 32 lbs.! She could barely walk on her own, but we could see the kindness and willingness to please in her eyes right away.

We immediately took her to see the vet, where she was diagnosed with a severe ear infection, skin infection, and hypothyroidism. She was put on daily medications and a strict diet and exercise regimen. She had surgery on her right ear for an aural hematoma. Jasmine was walked daily, which was quite a challenge in the beginning. We started slow and kept her moving forward. She was even starting to get a little pep in her step! We got her into some swim therapy sessions and she is doing better every day!

Her skin is healed and her hair is even starting to grow back nicely. Her ears are clear and healed. It’s been three months since this sweet girl came to us and we are happy to report that she has lost a total of 5 lbs. and is even running now! She is sweeter than ever and loves every one — people, dogs and cats alike. She loves to run and play with kids in the yard and enjoys going out to our adoption events!
