L.A.S.S.I./Oceana County Animal Shelter: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

For the past several months we, like most shelters, have had so many people surrendering their pets. We only have the capacity for 14 animals and we currently have 16.

We do have volunteers who walk the dogs daily, but the dogs get bored [in their kennels] and the KONG toys (filled with peanut butter, of course) give them something to occupy their minds and not get too bored. The dogs love the treats and, without these Kongs, they might end up becoming kennel-crazy.

How many pets did this grant help?

75-100

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Serena (pictured), a 6-year-old mastiff mix, was brought to the shelter after she had a litter of puppies. She was at the shelter for 30 days before someone was interested in her.

She went out on a trial adoption and we discovered she loves people and kids, but not cats, so she was brought back.

Fortunately, we did some additional promoting on her availability and let her be the office dog for a week and a family adopted her. She is doing well in her new home.

She loves the Kongs!
