Manistee County Humane Society/Homeward Bound Animal Shelter: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The products were, and still are, used for dog enrichment. The Kongs are filled and given to our dogs to help them relax and spend more time with the filled Kong rather than being stressed in their kennels. The products work well and we continue to use them.

The Kongs are filled with treats and given to the dogs to help them relieve kennel stress. The Kongs help keep them busy and not have so much kennel anxiety.

How many pets did this grant help?

All of our dogs in house: 10 dogs.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Trina is a 9-year-old boxer/hound mix who has been at the shelter a long time. In our area, most people have more than one pet, and Trina cannot be in a home with other pets. We have tried to introduce her many times and we had a trainer come in to help with her issues, but that was unsuccessful. She is a very sweet girl who loves people and children but cannot be adopted into a home with other pets and this is why she is still at the shelter. We also have tried to get other shelters or rescues in more-populated areas to come and get her in hopes of getting her adopted into the right home. No one will come get her.

She suffers from separation and kennel anxiety. We give her a Kong every day and a wonderful volunteer will come in three to four days a week to walk her and take her on car rides. She loves to walk the beach in the warmer months and enjoys time in the yards playing all year long. It truly breaks my heart that we have not been able to help her better. She is often on our local morning news for their adopt-a-pet-Tuesdays pet spotlight. She is posted in the local newspaper, on Petfinder, on our website and on all our social media pages. I have emailed many shelters and rescues and will always try to show her first to potential adopters. We continue to try and find someone who will love this girl as much as we do. Meet Trina:
