Louisiana SPCA: KONG Toys Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant helped us provide enrichment for animals in our care. KONGs were put in rotation with the other KONGs that we clean and use for enrichment daily. They also replaced any KONGS that were deemed unusable because of wear.
We see a high volume of animals who come into our care every year, and the wear-and-tear that comes with caring for these animals takes a toll on our resources. By providing these animals with an enrichment outlet, we allow their personalities to come out and be seen by both volunteers and potential adopters.
How many pets did this grant help?
Since Jan. 1, we have taken in more than 950 dogs. Many of these dogs were given KONG toys to provide enrichment during their stay.
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Thanks in part to the Petfinder Foundation, we have been able to provide enrichment to the hundreds of dogs in our care. One such dog was Speckles, a 4-month-old Catahoula mix.
Speckles was brought to us by a landlord whose tenant had left the dog behind after being evicted. Speckles, a young puppy, was full of energy and curiosity and was looking for a home.
Speckles was always looking to play and looking for enrichment, so we gave him a KONG donated by the Petfinder Foundation to play with. This toy allowed him to redirect his energy to the toy so that when he met with potential adopters, he was on his best behavior.
He eventually got adopted and made sure to let his adopters know how much he loved his KONG!
