Cat Haven: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Following Hurricane Ida, we had more than 70 admissions requests. Due to our capacity, we could not admit all 70+ animals. Still, with the support of the Petfinder Foundation, this grant provided care for more than 40 of our rescues, including spay/neuter, veterinary care, rabies vaccines, 4-in-1 vaccine, flea treatment, microchipping, and testing for feline diseases.

The money from this grant helped Cat Haven accommodate the influx in admissions for animals affected by Hurricane Ida. It allowed us to adhere to our policies and intake protocols, supporting care for incoming animals. This allowed the animals in our care, specifically those affected by the storm, to become fully adaptable!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Sake lived the good life until Hurricane Ida hit the Baton Rouge area, causing extreme flooding inside her home. After the storm’s aftermath was seen, Sake and her owner had to evacuate to a hotel.

Living in a hotel was no life for Sake, and her owner could tell the difference in her demeanor. Sake needed a change — a permanent home, since it was unknown when or if Sake and her owner would have that in the future. Making a tough decision, but one in Sake’s best interest, her elderly owner surrendered her to Cat Haven. At Cat Haven, we accept all cats who were adopted from us if the adopter ever has to surrender. Sake fit that category. She was adopted from Cat Haven in 2016.

Upon being re-admitted to Cat Haven, Sake was very shy and stayed hidden. She needed to be updated on all of her vaccinations and, since she was previously adopted from Cat Haven, was already spayed. With patience, love, and care provided by our staff and volunteers, in time Sake started to come out of her shell. After two months of being cared for by Cat Haven, Sake was adopted by a young man who had recently lost his cat. Their connection was immediate. On this day, Sake and her adopter’s lives were forever changed!

This story and the happy ending would not have been possible without the support of the Petfinder Foundation!
