Barren River Animal Welfare Association: Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Reduced adoption fees for hard-to-place dogs such as disabled, elderly, and black dogs, and certain breeds.

BRAWA was able to use the grant funds to offset the reduced adoption fee to help hard-to-place dogs find homes. We were able to reduce adoption fees for 14 dogs and as a result, they found forever homes.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Dumplin is a 12-year-old female Chihuahua. She was brought to BRAWA by Animal Control as a stray. Upon intake, it was determined that Dumplin was infested with fleas and yeast, had mange, was missing most of her teeth, and was in very poor physical condition due to a lack of adequate food and a poor diet.

Dumplin had a lot going against her as a senior, black dog with medical issues, as many dogs in her condition are considered hard-to-place or unadoptable. Fortunately, after some good nutrition and medical care by BRAWA staff along with the benefit of a reduced adoption fee, Dumplin was adopted within a week by an individual with expertise with the breed and caring for elderly animals with medical conditions. As you can see from the attached photo, she was very happy to be adopted!
