Schuyler County Humane Society: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Through the Kia Pet Adoption Grant, the Schuyler County Humane Society was able to offer half-price adoption fees with an approved application. By utilizing this grant, we were able to adopt out 13 cats and seven dogs at this reduced fee. Because the kittens were half-price, several people even adopted two for the price of one. Thank you, Petfinder Foundation and Kia, for all you do to help these homeless animals!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Domino (first photo) was relinquished to the Schuyler County Humane Society by his owner in October 2022 when he was around 8 months old. He had been kept in a kennel outside his whole life and displayed anxiety issues while in the kennel.

Domino was eventually adopted in January 2023. That family tried everything to help with his separation-anxiety issues, including adopting another dog as a companion. After the family had a baby in March of that year, the changes just proved too much for Domino, so he was returned to the animal shelter.

To assist with his anxiety, Domino was given pet-CBD products, which seemed to help. One of our volunteers also took Domino through a dog-training course in May. What an awesome student he was!

In the spring, one of our volunteers lost her pointer mix and was heartbroken. When she saw Domino, it was love at first sight, but she was concerned about his anxiety. She finally took a leap of faith in July and took Domino for a trial. From that point on, we knew he would never come back to the shelter.

She has been very patient with him and is slowly working with his separation-anxiety issues. Domino’s adoption was finalized in early August (second photo). We continue to receive wonderful updates from his new mom!
