Hawaii Island Humane Society: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The KONG toys are being used as an enrichment activity for our shelter dogs. We hand out towels and toys every morning for the dogs to keep them entertained and to alleviate stress.

Our shelter relies on volunteers to help provide stimulation and activity for the animals. However, volunteers are not always at our shelter, so we find other ways to provide this enrichment. We play calming music, provide a clean towel, give treats and hand out KONG toys.

How many pets did this grant help?

This particular grant was distrubited to our Kona shelter and on any given day can provide enrichment for 20-40 dogs.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Gremlin knows that before he can get his KONG toy, he must sit. As soon as he sees the animal care technician with the basket of KONG toys in his hand, he sits! His whole body is wiggly as he excitedly wags his tail waiting for his toy. Gremlin’s favorite part of the day is getting his KONG toy to play with — especially if it has treats inside! Gremlin was just selected to be transferred to our mainland transfer partner shelter, Kitsap Humane Society, in hopes of finding his forever home. Whoever adopts Gremlin will have a handsome, obedient and silly new best friend!
