Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter: P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The P.L.A.Y pet beds were used in our kennels to make older dogs and dogs with medical conditions more comfortable; they were also used to provide fosters with beds for their foster dogs.

It saved a substantial amount of money we would have spent on beds for foster and medical cases and it greatly improved the quality of care for the animals who entered our shelter and needed the extra support of the beds.

How many pets did this grant help?

Approximately 200 as we have washed and re used the beds multiple times.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Hamlet was an older schnauzer mix who entered our shelter this month. He was one of 29 dogs who came in from a puppy mill that was being shut down. Hamlet had severe arthritis as well as dental issues and skin infections (his photo shows him at intake). The bed provided him with a warm and safe place to sleep after living his entire life not knowing what a soft bed was. He slept almost 24 hours straight after entering our shelter and wouldn’t leave the bed except to go out for walks or to get food and water. This is just one example of how these beds improved the quality of life for a shelter dog.
