Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant allowed us to find homes for many of the dogs we have had at the shelter and many others who have come in to our care. A few of the dogs have been here quite a long time. It was very rewarding to see these animals walk free through the doors of the shelter.

How many pets did this grant help?

We have helped 27 dogs find their forever homes.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

There was a dog by the name of Atlas (first photo) who was brought in to the shelter as an owner-surrender because his original owner was not able to keep him, so she gave him to her mom to take care of. The mom decided that she could not care for him any more, so she brought him in and dropped him at the shelter.

He is a very beautiful dog, but was not really very friendly to people or other dogs. We just kind of let him be here and he did finally take to one of our kennel techs.

After about 15 weeks here at the shelter, his original owner came to see him. Everyone was surprised by the change in his demeanor. She brought her two sons and he was so happy to see them. It was truly a sight to see.

She was able to adopt him back because of the decreased adoption fees. Now he is happy at home, playing with his two little boys!

You will find attached pictures of some of the adoptions that took place during this adoption grant.
