Nassau Humane Society: Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation Senior Pet Adoption Assistance grant, we were finally able to find a home for our special senior bonded pair, Boone and Ella.
Within a week after making the announcement on social media about being awarded this grant, the perfect adopter stepped forward and is so thrilled to be welcoming Boone and Ella into her home.
We are confident that they will be pampered for the rest of their lives, and thanks to this grant, we know that their life-saving medical care will continue to be covered without worry.

Boone (first photo) and Ella (second photo) were surrendered to NHS when their owner’s health took an unfortunate turn and she was no longer able to care for the pair any longer.
Given that this senior duo have spent their entire lives together, a whopping 14 years (this is information that was obtained post grant-application submission — we received the updated age information after learning who their original veterinarian was), we knew they obviously couldn’t be split up.
Boone and Ella had been together in our shelter since October 2022. While we operate in an area where smaller dogs tend to be adopted quickly, the fact that they were both seniors and needed to be adopted together left potential adopters feeling like they might require more, financially, than a single, younger dog.
We hoped that receiving the Petfinder Foundation Senior Pet Adoption Assistance grant would give this sweet pair a leg up, and it did! Boone and Ella were adopted by a wonderful woman who was prepared to pamper them for the rest of their lives, and we are at ease knowing that she has the support of this generous grant to cover the cost of their ongoing medical care and medications.
