Houndhaven, Inc.: Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The funds will be used for three CD players to be used in kennel areas to play music and enrich the environment for our canine guests. To the extent there are funds left over, we will purchase new Nylabones for our dogs to enjoy.

This grant will enable us to enrich the lives of our canine guests. It is stressful for them to live in a kennel environment, especially those who are with us for months. By playing soothing music in our kennel areas and providing our guests with Nylabones to chew and help pass the time, we hope to make their lives a little more pleasant while they wait for their forever homes.

How many pets did this grant help?

We typically have 15-20 dogs at a time and rescue 75-100 per year. Assuming these items last for five years, it could be as many as 500 dogs!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

We have not yet gotten the check, but as soon as we do and get the items, we anticipate that it will help Tripp. He is a 7-year-old black Lab whose owner didn’t bother to reclaim him from Animal Control, although he knew Tripp was there. We couldn’t let this poor boy sit there, unloved and unwanted, so we brought him to Houndhaven. He misses being in a home, and barks constantly when anyone is around. We think that music will help soothe him and help relieve his stress. Meet Tripp here.
