Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA): Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We are so grateful for the support of the Petfinder Foundation and your grant that allowed us to hold a reduced-fee adoption event for cats and dogs. This was especially important for our animals because they have been moving through our shelters less quickly in the past few months, with adoption rates decreasing. This has meant longer lengths of stay for animals and overcrowding, which is stressful. This has been particularly acute for large dogs and small animals. Thanks to the grant, we had reduced-fee adoptions (50% off) for three days, resulting in our finding loving homes for 34 animals!

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Maxwell, a young male pit mix, had been with us for a while during his short life! He was surrendered with two siblings when he was just a few weeks old in March 2022.

Once he was old enough to be neutered and adopted, he found a home in late April. However, in October that owner brought him back to the shelter, citing a change in his schedule and he could no longer keep up with his young dog’s needs.

During Maxwell’s second stint with us, our behavior team worked with him to reduce his mouth play. Fortunately, Maxwell showed no aggression, but he did need to learn how to reduce biting and nipping when excited.

We were excited for Maxwell when a couple came in to adopt him during the reduced-fee weekend thanks to the Petfinder Foundation grant. Our adoption counselors outlined Maxwell’s need for training around his mouth play to continue, and the couple promised to help Maxwell be his best self!
