Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California: Sponsor a Pet Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Our Forever Foster Program and Patchwork Fund -- both for our senior hounds.

The Patchwork Fund is a special fund for medical bills for senior hounds who are rescued and need extensive medical care. The Forever Foster Program is a hybrid between traditional Basset Hound adoptions and fostering aimed at helping senior bassets find forever homes in which to spend their golden years. This program allows approved forever-foster parents to “adopt” a senior basset (age 10+) to take home to love and care for with the continued foster-system support of Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California.

How many pets did this grant help?

We had seven Forever Fosters, but sadly lost three this year.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

The grant you awarded us helped us greatly in paying medical bills for our senior hounds. One of our newest Forever Fosters is Buster. He was rescued in 2014 at 10 years old. He had cancer and had some huge medical bills. After being with the rescue for almost a year, he was added to the Forever Foster program, and I was lucky enough to have him come and live with me. Sadly, I had lost both of my Bassets, Sadie and Jaxi, to cancer last year, Sadie in August and Jaxi on New Year’s Eve. I didn’t know if I was ready to open my home up to another Basset, but had fallen in love with Buster and knew he needed a permanent home.

Medical bills for my two were very extensive, topping $15,000, and that was another concern. By Buster being a part of the Forever Foster program, grant money will help when and if he needs medical attention that I can’t afford. In the meantime, he has brought life back into my house, and I hope we are giving him the love and happiness he deserves. Without your grant money, BHRSC would not be able to fund such a program and seniors and dogs with severe medical conditions would not find their forever homes. BHRSC thanks you and I personally thank you too.
