This grant helped us get Nala the emergency surgeries she needed to save her life. The vet told us that without the surgery and drain to clear the infection, Nala would have died.

The grant was used for the emergency medical care of Nala, who was found living in a backyard shed with her two 3-day-old kittens. We put Nala and her kittens into a foster home, where she took great care of them. Nala was spayed on April 26, 2020, and there were serious complications. It is suspected that the vet who did the spay nicked her mammary gland.

Two days after her spay, Nala stopped eating and became lethargic. We took her back to the vet for a re-check and were told it was normal for a cat to act that way after being spayed. Knowing that something was not right, we took Nala to different vet for a second opinion, where it was discovered that she had a 104-degree temperature and that her spay area was infected and full of pus.

Nala needed to have surgery to clean the infection, additional stitches to close the incision that had started to open due to swelling, and a drain inserted into her abdomen to allow the infection to clear. Nala had the drain removed after a week and seemed to be healing and feeling better.

Then, on May 24, 2020, she got her e-collar off and the foster awoke to find that Nala’s incision had opened and part of her intestines were protruding. Nala ended up needing another surgery to reposition her internal organs and to have the incision site closed for the third time.
