Muttville: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This $250 COVID-19 Operation Grant helped Muttville with the increased costs of prescription diets and medications for our senior rescue dogs in foster care. These costs skyrocketed for us overnight when we had to place 100% of our dogs in foster homes for the first time ever when shelter-in-place orders went into effect.

Due to COVID-19 and the shelter-in-place orders that went into effect in San Francisco on March 16, we had to place 100% of our dogs in foster homes for the first time ever. Usually headquarters is open to fosters to come and pick up supplies as needed. Because of the pandemic, the safest course of action for our staff and fosters was to send fosters home with an extended supply of prescription food and prescription medications for chronic conditions. Because most adopters were unable to become clients with veterinary clinics (clinics were and are overwhelmed, and some were closed), we attempted to provide the fosters with enough prescription meds and food for one month to help get them through the shelter-in-place period.

How many pets did this grant help?

Approximately six senior dogs

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Kaya, a 10-year-old, 55-lb. husky, came to Muttville after one of our community members found her online being sold for $50. Muttville, of course, wanted to help. Kaya is always wagging her tail and, as a husky, has some things to say! It was clear that she had not been well cared for, but we provided all the care she needed to begin feeling better in her amazing foster home. This included medication and supplements to help manage her arthritis, and a necessary prescription diet to address issues with her digestive health. While awaiting adoption, she even underwent a few procedures (spay and mammary-mass removal) to set her up for the best new beginning possible. Kaya was adopted a little over a month after first coming to Muttville, and now lives with a wonderful family and a husky sibling! Thank you to the Petfinder Foundation for helping us to support Kaya, her foster home, and her adopters on this journey.
