Humane Society of the Ouachitas: Stretch and Scratch Cat Scratchers Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The scratching pads were used to enrich the environment of our shelter cats while they stay with us and given to adopters to give the cats a better start in their new homes by having something of their own to scratch.

The scratch pads are fantastic! Our cat habitats tend to be of hard, easy to clean surfaces. Nothing that lends itself to a cat exhibiting it's natural desire to claw and scratch. The scratch pads are the perfect solution. They allow the cat to release stress by having one in their habitat and the environment stays sanitary as every adopted cat is sent home with their own scratch pad and every new cat gets a fresh one. Our cats are noticably more contented now that they have something of their own to scratch. THANK YOU!

How many pets did this grant help?

So far 20 but over 50 will be helped by the time the scratch pads are used and given away.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

There were 3 brother kittens. Very loving, very energetic and very vocal. Their names were Oz, Oreo and October. They were bored and agitated in their habitat, even though it was the largest one at the shelter. They were among the first to have the donated scratch pads put into their “room.” They loved it! Jumped and played, scratched and chewed to their hearts content. They had a healthy outlet for their energy and were soon adopted into loving homes. All 3 were sent home with their own scratcher.
