Good Shepherd Humane Society: WAHL Grooming Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We received some wonderful oatmeal combination shampoos that we are using on dogs.

This fall, we had a number of dogs who came to us with skin problems. Some had demodectic mange, one dog had been dunked in motor oil (a shih tzu mix), and others had flea dermatitis. Finally, we had a litter of 6-week-old puppies with horrible sarcoptic mange. All of our dogs benefited from the great shampoo, because it not only smelled GREAT, it lathered and rinsed well, and soothed the irritated skin of the dogs and puppies!

How many pets did this grant help?

We've used it on about 30 right now, and we still have shampoo to use.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

The first dog is Castor Oyl. Castor came to us as a stray, and he had horrible flea dermatitis and had lost most of his hair. However, the people who found him thought he had mange, so they’d dunked him in old motor oil. He stank to high heaven! I only have a “before” picture, because he got adopted the day we got him groomed and we didn’t think to grab a photo. The second photo shows one of the litter of puppies that came in with sarcoptic mange. His name is Hardy, and he just represents what the litter looked like. The third photo shows him after his treatment and a shampoo with the Wahl Oatmeal. While the shampoo alone won’t cure the puppies, it does make them less itchy and soothes their skin while we are treating their mange.
